RAMPF Goes International: Malta, CAD & A Touch of Hollywood

01/28/25

Malta – an island full of history, azure seas, and picturesque streets that even captivate Hollywood. No wonder the blockbuster Gladiator II was filmed here. But RAMPF trainee Lorena had her own adventure – a four-week internship at an architecture firm.

The product design trainee at RAMPF Production Systems chose to step out of her comfort zone and embrace the adventure of an international internship. Four weeks in Malta – one dedicated to English classes, three immersed in an architecture firm, and a wealth of unforgettable experiences.

I wanted to stand on my own two feet and see what it’s like to do something like this independently.

No sooner said than done.

From idea to reality

“In the fall of 2023, I told my trainer about my idea,” Lorena recalls. “She thought it was great and forwarded it to the management.”

The result? Four weeks of leave, full pay, and a lot of support – a huge help in making the project manageable both in terms of time and finances.

It shows how much RAMPF supports its trainees.

Via the organization “Go for Europe”, she not only found her internship, but also accommodation – a shared flat with five other young people from across Baden-Wurttemberg. “Of course, there were challenges, but I knew what I was getting into from the start (laughs). We had enough space, and it was fun exploring the island together.

Architecture meets product design

At architect Silvienne Camilleri’s office, Lorena created CAD models, wrote invoices, and worked on Excel spreadsheets. “The work wasn’t completely new, but it was exciting because I used different programs and worked in much bigger dimensions.”

While RAMPF focuses on machine parts, here it was about floor plans for a department store. Her spatial thinking remained the same, but her perspective shifted – exactly the change she had been seeking.

Chaos, charm, and pastizzis

There was also time outside of work to explore Malta. From the Dingli Cliffs and the Blue Lagoon on Comino to the vibrant streets of Valletta, the island amazed with its diversity. “You feel like, no matter where you are, you can see the sea.” She especially grew fond of pastizzis, Maltese pastries. “I already miss them!”

And the biggest gain? Besides improved English skills and new professional expertise, it was the experience of standing on her own.

You learn to come out of your shell and you grow from this.

Lorena’s Conclusion

Malta is more than just a Hollywood filming location – it’s a place where you can grow. And RAMPF? An employer that makes such opportunities possible.
